How to Make Café-Quality Coffee at Home
· Kitcho
Great coffee doesn't need a barista apron. With a decent machine and a few good habits, your morning cup can rival your favorite café, and save you a small fortune along the way.
1. Start with fresh beans
Coffee is at its best within a few weeks of roasting. Buy smaller bags more often, store them in an airtight container away from light and heat, and skip the fridge.
2. Grind right before brewing
Ground coffee loses flavor fast. Grinding just before you brew is the single biggest upgrade most people can make. For espresso, aim for a fine, powdery grind that feels like table salt.
3. Warm everything up
Let your machine fully heat up, then run a little hot water through the group head and into your cup. A warm cup keeps your espresso tasting rich instead of flat.
4. Measure, don't guess
A small kitchen scale makes your coffee consistent. A good starting point for a double shot is about 18 grams of coffee in and 36 grams of espresso out in roughly 25 to 30 seconds. Adjust your grind until it tastes right to you.
5. Keep it clean
Old coffee oils turn bitter quickly. Rinse the portafilter after every use, wipe the steam wand right away, and descale your machine regularly so it keeps performing like new.
Our take
The right machine makes all of this easier. Look for one that heats quickly, holds a steady temperature and is simple to clean. Browse our coffee machines to find your new favorite morning ritual.
